In 2003 I moved to Canberra to purchase Dickson Shoe Repairs. Shortly after purchasing the shop I changed the name to Jhay the Cobbler as I wanted to create a unique brand and build the business around the skills I had developed in my career in Sydney.
For the first 2 years the business was slow and I spent a fair bit of my time twiddling my thumbs resting on the counter while waiting for the next customer. I was starting to wonder if moving to Canberra and purchasing this business was a mistake. However, in late 2005 the shop started to show some real momentum and the repairs were starting to come in, regular clientele were coming back with more repairs and the business was standing firmly on its own two legs.
It was at this time I decided to refit the shop for the first time, it wasn't that different from the previous but all the benches were new. I increased the accessories range to provide a wider range of services and products to my customers.
In 2009, the business had also grown to a point where I needed more storage for materials and to store the incoming repairs until it was time to work on them. I started using vacant office space in the building and although I couldn't set up shelving it gave me back a workshop.
In 2012 the business was at a point where it needed to be updated as the shop was too small to cope with the incoming work. I took on a second space in the building, which is set up as a sewing and storage room. Although it was difficult to have 2 workshops it was a necessity for the business.
2016 sees the need for a remodel and update of improved benchtops and storage for the workroom and an entirely new fitout for the shopfront.
I believe the reason my business has grown year after year is due to the standard of work that I produce. I have made the conscious decision that to maintain standards I am the one that does the work. As this is how I have decided to run my business please understand that I provide an estimated time for the repair to be completed. This is provided at the time the repair is brought to the shop.
Due to the unpredictability of day to day business, the estimated wait time on occasion, can exceed my initial estimate and it may take longer to complete a repair. I can assure you that I will never compromise my quality of work in order to have a repair completed in haste.
In order to keep prices reasonable, I run my shop on a pre-payment basis and all workmanship receives a lifetime guarantee.
I hope to see you soon at my shop located at the Dickson shops (opposite the post office).
